WB and Kolkata Police step up to save the life

Medica Group of Hospitals, the largest private hospital chain in eastern India, underwent heart transplant surgery under Swasthya Saathi at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata’s flagship facility, and earned a 33-year-old daily salary from Farakka in Murshidabad. Most Experienced doctors from the cardiac surgery department including Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Senior Vice Chairman and Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata, Dr. Arpan Chakrabarty, ECMO Physician & Critical Care Specialist at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Dr. Soumyajit Ghosh, Associate Consultant & Cardiac Surgeon at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Dr. Mrinal Das, Senior Consultant & Cardiac Surgeon at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Dr. Dipanjan Chatterjee, ECMO Physician & Critical Care Specialist at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Dr. Ashutosh Samal, Associate Consultant, Cardiac Surgeon at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Dr. Deblal Pandit, Dr. Saibal Tripathy, and the Medica Superspecialty Hospital care team worked together.

A 33-year-old day laborer from Farakka, Murshidabad (Jia Ul Haque) found it harder to do his daily chores due to acute shortness of breath. He was earlier diagnosed with end-stage heart failure and his heart was pumping at 20%. (normal 65%); also, he prescribed a lot of medicines, some of which were too expensive for him to bear. In March 2022, he met Dr.Kunal Sarkar at a free cardiac camp at the Medical Hospital in Murshidabad, where he was referred to the Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata for free further cardiac evaluation. After evaluation, the sole glimmer of hope for him was a heart transplant.

The team of medical clinicians from Medica Clinics approached the Swasthya Bhavan after understanding his financial situation and were assured of their assistance through the Swasthya Saathi Scheme. In response to the appeal, a few other donors also offered to contribute. He is listed on national and regional organ donation websites. A heart was donated in Calcutta in the first week of July; he was asked to come from Farakka, but he went home very sad because the heart was then given to a very ill patient in another hospital in Calcutta. After ten days, an alert for another heart donation at the SSKM trauma centre was received. It was Eid weekend and it was proving impossible to organize transportation to take the patient to Kolkata. After a discussion, Mr. Aloke Sarkar (Beniabukur PS) from Kolkata Police, who himself was a severe COVID survivor who was treated on ECMO in Medica, was contacted; Then he hooked us up with Mhd Mustafa in Farakka to get help.

Organ harvesting was planned for the morning of July 10th, 2022. In the early hours of July 10th, the patient arrived in Kolkata from Farakka.

Dr. Kunal Sarkar, who led the operation, said that it was a treat to watch a new lease of life being given to a young patient. We at Medica are forever grateful to Donor (RKG Seba Foundation) and Manju Bakta’s family for sticking to their previous pledge to Ganadarpan. The entire operation is successful. The patient has recovered very well and should be discharged from the hospital in a few days.We wish him all the best in his future life. “

Further, according to Dr. Arpan Chakraborty, an ECMO physician and critical care specialist at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, “1 percent of India’s population suffers from heart failure, and many lives can be saved if it is identified early. Due to time limits, those who reside in remote places could find it challenging to do such a procedure. Therefore, we routinely host free health camps in isolated locations and provide assistance as needed in order to save precious lives.

Medica Group of Hospitals Chairman Dr. Alok Roy stated, “We are here to serve, regardless of financial status, religion, gender, or nationality, and we are extremely grateful to have done so.” We are thrilled to be able to save lives through organ donation and hope that more families will come forward to pledge organs.”
