Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd., one of India’s most respected global pharmaceutical companies, has released a landmark whitepaper titled “Translational Research Ecosystem: Learnings from the World & Building for India”. The comprehensive publication spotlights translational science as the critical bridge between scientific discovery and real-world healthcare impact — positioning it at the intersection of innovation, collaboration, funding, regulation, clinical development, policymaking, and commercialization.

This timely release arrives as India’s pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors increasingly seek to accelerate their transition from being a manufacturing powerhouse to a genuine global discovery hub. Furthermore, the whitepaper adds important momentum to a national conversation about how India can systematically bridge the gap between laboratory breakthroughs and patient-ready treatments.

What Is Translational Research — and Why Does It Matter for India?

Translational science is increasingly at the forefront of modern biomedical innovation worldwide. In essence, it is the discipline that converts scientific discoveries — often developed in academic laboratories — into practical, accessible therapies and healthcare solutions that benefit patients. However, the journey from lab to bedside is far from straightforward.

In India, this journey is shaped by a complex interplay of scientific, operational, financial, and regulatory challenges. Moreover, while India has established many of the foundational elements required for innovation, the pathway between early-stage discovery and full clinical development remains fragmented. As a result, promising innovations frequently lose momentum before reaching the patients who need them most.

The new Dr. Reddy’s whitepaper directly addresses this systemic challenge, presenting a practical and evidence-based framework to unlock translational research at scale in India.

Satish Reddy, Chairman of Dr. Reddy’s, Sets the Vision

Speaking on the release of the whitepaper, Satish Reddy, Chairman, Dr. Reddy’s, underlined both the urgency and the opportunity that this moment presents for India’s innovation ecosystem:

“India stands at a critical inflection point in its innovation journey. To realize our ambition of becoming a global discovery hub, we need a step change — from incremental progress to innovation at scale. This requires stronger translational research pathways to ensure that scientific discoveries translate into meaningful patient impact, alongside accelerated R&D, scaled talent aligned to academic and research structures, and shared infrastructure to support innovation more efficiently. With the right coordination, India has the potential to play an important role in shaping the future of healthcare.”

The whitepaper is based on discussions from the third roundtable convened by Dr. Reddy’s, held as a prelude to the prestigious Dr. Anji Reddy Memorial Lecture Series. It brings together actionable insights and strategic recommendations from leading global and Indian experts across academia, industry, government, not-for-profit organizations, and hospitals. The roundtable identified six key priorities for strengthening India’s translational research ecosystem:

  1. Bridging the Translational Gap

While India has developed strong capabilities in scientific research and pharmaceutical manufacturing, the pathway between early-stage discovery and clinical development remains fragmented. Consequently, promising innovations lose momentum before reaching patients. Addressing this structural gap is identified as the most urgent priority.

2. Strengthening Collaboration Across the Ecosystem

Greater engagement between academia, industry, healthcare institutions, investors, and government agencies will be essential to accelerating the translation of scientific research into viable healthcare solutions. The whitepaper emphasizes that no single stakeholder can bridge this gap alone — therefore, cross-sector collaboration is non-negotiable.

3. Expanding Translational Funding Mechanisms

Sustained and appropriately structured funding is required to support innovations through the long and often complex journey from discovery to development and commercialization. In addition, the whitepaper highlights the need for funding models that match the unique risk profile of translational research.

4. Building Regulatory Capability Through a Centre of Excellence for Innovation

A globally competitive innovation ecosystem requires regulatory systems that evolve alongside scientific advances. Moreover, building a structured programme or a dedicated Centre of Excellence for innovation regulation would inspire greater confidence among researchers, developers, and investors.

5. Unlocking the Value of Clinical Data and Healthcare Networks

India’s hospitals, patient cohorts, and real-world clinical data represent a significant but deeply underutilised research asset. Integrating these resources into translational pathways could substantially accelerate the pace of innovation. Furthermore, India’s scale and demographic diversity make this an unparalleled competitive advantage if properly harnessed.

6. Measuring Success Through Patient Outcomes

Ultimately, the whitepaper argues that the true measure of progress in translational research should not be research publications or patents alone. Instead, success must be defined by the number of innovations that actually reach patients and demonstrably improve health outcomes.

Expert Voices: The Roundtable Panel

The third roundtable, which forms the basis of the whitepaper, brought together an exceptionally distinguished group of global and Indian thought leaders. The panel included:

  • Dr. Soumya Swaminathan — Chairperson, M S Swaminathan Research Foundation
  • Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao — Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani
  • Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman — CEO, Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF)
  • Prof. Guido Kroemer — Université Paris Cité; Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus, Paris
  • Dr. Satya Prakash Dash — CEO, IKP Knowledge Park, Hyderabad
  • Dr. Murali Ramachandra — CEO, Aurigene Oncology Ltd., Bengaluru
  • Prof. B.J. Rao — Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad
  • Dr. Hrishikesh Sarkar — Director, Centre for Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology, Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad

The roundtable was chaired by Satish Reddy, Chairman, Dr. Reddy’s, and moderated by Anju Ghangurde, Executive Editor (APAC), Citeline.

About the Dr. Anji Reddy Memorial Lecture Series

Dr. Reddy’s instituted the Dr. Anji Reddy Memorial Lecture Series in 2023 to honour the extraordinary contributions of scientist, entrepreneur, and institution builder Dr. K. Anji Reddy, who founded Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories in 1984.

Since 2024, the company has hosted an annual roundtable ahead of each lecture, convening Nobel Laureates and senior leaders from academia, research, industry, clinical practice, and public institutions. Each roundtable culminates in a detailed whitepaper capturing key insights, developed in partnership with Citeline. Previous editions focused on “Emerging Frameworks in Innovation” and “Prevention, Cure & Quality of Life: A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective on Public Health.”
