On the occasion of World Heart Day, KIMS Sunshine Hospital, Begumpet, organized an awareness program highlighting heart diseases and modern interventions. The event, themed “Don’t Miss a Beat”, brought together doctors from the KIMS Sunshine Hospital Heart Institute and included a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the day.
Rising Heart Diseases Among Young Adults
Dr. Sridhar Kasturi, Head of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Senior Interventional Cardiologist, emphasized the increasing prevalence of heart diseases due to stressful lifestyles.
“From a fetus in the womb to the age of 70, the human heart beats nearly 2.5 billion times. Every year, over 1.7 crore people die worldwide due to heart problems, and 80% of these deaths are preventable with early diagnosis, timely treatment, and lifestyle changes,” he said.
He noted that factors such as diabetes, smoking, microplastics, traffic pollution, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and mental stress are contributing to heart disease in both youth and elderly populations.
Prevention and Early Detection
Dr. Kasturi highlighted the importance of early detection through small scans and tests. He recommended adopting healthy lifestyle habits to protect heart health:
- Eat more vegetables and reduce salt, sugar, and fat intake
- Exercise regularly
- Avoid smoking and alcohol
- Practice yoga and meditation
“Even small lifestyle adjustments can significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular problems,” he added.
