IIT-Hyderabad to launch medical physics course

IIT-Hyderabad to introduce MSc Medical Physics

IIT-Hyderabad (IIT-H) will soon begin a three-year Master of Science (MSc) programme in medical physics in collaboration with Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (BIACH&RI).

The program’s goal is to provide world-class medical physicist specialist training in the concepts and techniques of applying physics in medicine. It plans to offer clinical orientation for radiation physics, clinical immersion and shadowing, industry and clinical lectures, short-term projects, and a 12-month clinical internship in the third year.

Students will benefit from the faculty’s academic expertise as well as the institute’s practical expertise. This programme is ideal for BSc candidates who have physics as one of their main subjects and who want to pursue a career in applied physics for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Candidates with these qualifications are eligible to apply for admission to IIT-H.

The qualifying degree grades will be used to screen the applications. An online interview will also take place. After completing the coursework and declaring results, students must complete 90 credits over three years, consisting of two years of course work (66 credits) and one year of mandatory medical physics and clinical internship (24 credits).

“The IIT-H has well-established departments of Biomedical Engineering and Physics providing UG, PG, and Ph.D. programmes wherein students solve various challenges of the healthcare sector,” said IIT-H director Prof BS Murty.

The MSc (Medical Physics) programme at IIT-H is the third PG programme in the field of healthcare, and it provides students with not only a strong academic background but also hands-on training in the form of a year-long clinical internship that prepares them for the workforce.”

Dr. T Subramaneshwar Rao, director and head of Surgical Oncology at BIACH&RI, elaborated on the program’s goals, saying IIT-H and BIACH&RI have collaborated to create a leading programme to train future medical and radiation physicists.
