Mithun Da to be Honored with the 'Dadasaheb Phalke Award' on October 8

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday (September 30, 2024) that this year, Mithun Chakraborty a.k.a Mithun Da will be honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The award will be presented on October 8 during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony. Mithun has acted in nearly 400 films and continues to be associated with various shows and movies, entertaining the nation for about 50 years.

Three-time National Award Winner and Padma Shri Recipient

Mithun Chakraborty, affectionately known as Mithun Da, began his film career in 1976 with the film ‘Mrigaya,’ for which he received a National Award. The 1982 film ‘Disco Dancer’ was widely popular and made Mithun Da a household name. He has been honored with three National Awards and the Padma Shri.

Influenced by the Naxalite Movement

Mithun Da’s real name is Gourang Chakraborty. He was born on June 16, 1950, in Kolkata and completed his education up to graduation. After earning his degree, he became involved with the Naxalite movement but returned home after the tragic death of his brother. However, returning from that path was not easy for him.

Studied Acting at the Film and Television Institute

After returning home, he studied acting at the Film and Television Institute in Pune and then moved to Mumbai in search of work. After hard work, he got the opportunity to become an assistant to Helen and landed a small role in Amitabh Bachchan’s film ‘Do Anjaane.’ Through his dedication and effort, he carved out a special identity in the Bollywood industry, earning recognition and accolades over the years.
