NMDC Colorado School of Mines MoU

NMDC Limited, India’s largest iron ore producer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), USA. The partnership aims to improve mining research, sustainable practices, and advanced technologies in India.

The MoU was signed between NMDC’s Research and Development Centre in Hyderabad and the Board of Trustees of Colorado School of Mines. Shri Vinay Kumar, Director (Technical), NMDC, signed the agreement on behalf of the company.

Through this collaboration, NMDC will adopt global research practices to strengthen India’s mining sector. The partnership will focus on iron ore beneficiation, mineral processing, and the recovery of critical minerals from mining waste and complex ores.

In addition, both organisations will work on new methods to reuse mining waste such as tailings, coal ash, and low-grade ores. This approach will help reduce environmental impact while creating new value from existing resources.

The MoU also covers advanced mining technologies. These include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), Mining 4.0 solutions, and autonomous systems like drones and self-driving vehicles. These technologies will improve efficiency, safety, and productivity in mining operations.

Another key focus area is the extraction of critical minerals, including rare earth elements. These minerals are essential for clean energy, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing. Therefore, the partnership supports India’s goal of building secure and sustainable mineral supply chains.

Commenting on the collaboration, NMDC Chairman and Managing Director Shri Amitava Mukherjee said the MoU marks an important step toward responsible and technology-driven mining. He added that the partnership will help NMDC strengthen research capabilities and support India’s self-reliance in critical minerals.

Overall, the NMDC–Colorado School of Mines agreement represents a strong international collaboration. It is expected to drive innovation, promote sustainable mining, and support the long-term growth of India’s mining industry.
