The Government of Telangana has announced a major boost to Genome Valley with the launch of 1 Bio, India’s first single-use bioprocess design and scale-up facility. This milestone marks a new phase of growth for India’s biologics and next-generation therapeutics sector.
For many years, biotech companies in India struggled with limited, expensive, and unpredictable scale-up infrastructure.
1 Bio solves this challenge. It provides end-to-end process development, pilot-scale validation, and advanced analytical capabilities. As a result, start-ups and established firms can now reduce capital costs and speed up product development.
The launch strengthens Telangana’s vision of positioning Genome Valley as a leading global hub for R&D-driven biotech innovation.
Built Through Strong Partnerships
1 Bio was conceptualised by the Government of Telangana through Telangana Lifesciences, in collaboration with:
- Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India
- Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC)
The centre sits on a 2-acre campus in Genome Valley and includes:
- State-of-the-art single-use bioprocess development systems
- Bioreactors up to 500 L
- Advanced upstream and downstream technologies
- A dedicated analytical suite
- 150,000 sq. ft. of plug-and-play R&D labs
- Innovation suites
- Shared analytical spaces
- Training labs for bioprocess skills
A key highlight is the collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific, which co-developed the Bioprocess Design Centre—a facility that allows GLP- and GMP-grade biomolecule development.
Genome Valley’s 25-Year Milestone
The event also marked 25 years of Genome Valley.
Hon’ble Minister Shri D. Sridhar Babu unveiled:
- A new Genome Valley logo, symbolising its next phase
- The design for a landmark gateway structure at the cluster’s entrance
To support growth, the Minister announced ₹200 crore worth of infrastructure upgrades, including:
- Road widening
- New greenfield roads
- Power improvements
- Landscaping and streetscaping
- Better connectivity and utilities
Significant Investments and Job Creation
Through a PPP model:
- The State enabled ₹150 crore investment in core infrastructure
- Thermo Fisher invested ₹90 crore in the Bioprocess Design Centre
- 1 Bio is expected to attract ₹500 crore from private companies
- The cluster will generate 500+ high-quality jobs
