The Department of Telecom Issues Warning about Scams Targeting Telegram

Telegram has gained popularity as an instant messaging app, especially among those who prefer alternatives to whatsApp or find it too complicated. Its Unique features make it stand out from WhatsApp. However, like many messaging platforms, Telegram is not immune to scams. The Department of Telecom (DoT) recently issued a warning about scams targeting Telegram users.

In its advisory, the Dot warned users to be cautious of various channels and links circulating on Telegram. Scammers are pretending to be reputable companies, and the DoT has urged them to stay alert. Special attention is being given to fraudulent work-from-home offers and lottery messages. The advisory also mentioned that scammers might share fake website links and pressure users into purchasing fake gift cards.

TRAI has recently imposed large fines on major telecom companies like Airtel, jio, BSNL and Vodafone Idea, totaling Rs. 141 crore, for failing to control spam calls. This new fine of Rs 12 crore adds to previous penalties. TRAI had earlier criticized these companies for not following rules to reduce unwanted calls, and telecom operators have faced fines several times before.

To tackle fake calls, TRAI has made updates to the rules and plans to make further improvements. If the companies don’t pay the fines the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) may fake the money from their bank guarantees. However, no action has been taken by Dot yet. The fines were imposed to protect customers from unwanted communications.
