On Tuesday, the Sensex closed at 80,684, down by 1,064 points, while the Nifty dropped 332 points to close at 24,336. The BSE Midcap index also fell by 311 points, closing at 47,816.
Out of the 30 Sensex stocks, 29 saw decline, and only 1 stock gained. Similarly, 49 out of the 50 Nifty stocks experienced a drop. All sectoral indices on the NSE recorded losses, with the Nifty PSU Bank sector witnessing the largest decline of 1.88%. Other sectors like Nifty Metal, Bank, Auto, and Pharma also saw a decline of around 2%.
Market experts believe investors stayed cautious ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision. While there is an expectation of a 0.25% rate cut by the Fed on Wednesday, uncertainty remains regarding further rate cuts in 2025.
The previous day, December 16, also saw a market decline, with the Sensex falling 384 points and the Nifty losing 100 points. The BSE Midcap index rose by 350 points, closing at 48,126. Among the Sensex stocks, 25 declined, and 5 gained, while in Nifty, 40 stocks saw losses, and 9 saw gains. The Nifty Realty sector was the biggest gainer, rising by 3.10%.
