Renowned actor Vidya Balan, known for her advocacy of social causes, has been chosen as the face of this initiative. After thorough industry analysis, the platform has identified specific scams such as Fake Customs Fee, Emergency cash requirements, Cash on Delivery, and Sextortion, which fraudsters frequently employ to deceive individuals on matrimonial sites across India.

Highlighting the significance of the Safe Matrimony campaign, Murugavel Janakiraman, Chairman and Managing Director of Matrimony.com, stated, “With the growing digital economy, online frauds have become more prevalent. While the majority benefit from online matrimony services, a small fraction faces fraudulent activities. While Matrimony.com takes multiple measures to keep the platform secure, it is crucial for members to exercise caution and remain vigilant. Matrimony.com has identified four primary types of online fraud:

  • Fake Customs Fee: Fraudsters demand a fake customs fee to be paid for receiving a gift.
  • Cash on Delivery: The fraud sends an item, instructs the recipient to pay, alleges a wrong delivery, and siphons off the money.
  • Sextortion: Perpetrators coerce individuals into viewing explicit content online and then blackmail them for money.

Vidya Balan, in the campaign video, sheds light on these scams, emphasizing the importance of digital vigilance and outlining safety measures. Matrimony.com’s safety initiatives, such as allowing only mobile-verified profiles, displaying government ID-verified member badges, and utilizing AI to detect suspicious profiles, are also highlighted.
