The Commonwealth Games 2022 are currently taking place in Birmingham, England. Today marks the seventh day of live action, with four days remaining.
There have already been 19 medals won by the Indian team, including 5 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze. Mirabai Chanu headlined a four-medal count on Saturday with her gold medal in the women’s 49kg event. Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli (73kg) earned India’s third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Earlier in the day, 19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga lifted a total of 300kg in Snatch and Clean & Jerk to win the men’s 67kg category. With a 140kg lift in Snatch, Lalrinnunga also broke the Games record for his division. The Indian women’s Lawn Bowls team and the Indian men’s Table Tennis team both won gold.
Saurav Ghosal made history by winning India’s first-ever singles medal in squash at the CWG. James Willstrop of England, a former world number one, was defeated by Ghosal 11-6, 11-1, and 11-4. Later that evening, Tejaswin Shankar won a bronze medal in the men’s high jump, and Gurdeep Singh capped off India’s weightlifting campaign with a bronze medal in the +109kg event. Murali Sreeshankar became the first Indian to win a silver medal in long jump at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Thursday, August 5.
