113th Birth Anniversary of Balamani Amma

On July 19, 1909, in the Keralan region of Thrissur, Balamani Amma was born. Saraswati Samman and Padma Vibhushan are only some of the accolades she got for her writing. The mother of Kamala Das was Balamani Amma. A 1984 Nobel Prize in Literature nomination was made for Kamala Das.
Balamani Amma never attended a formal school. Her uncle Nalappat Narayana Menon, a well-known Malayali poet, taught her at home. Amma grew up studying her uncle’s extensive library of books and works. On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, Google Doodle will honour Balamani Amma on her birth anniversary.

Life and Works of Balamani Amma
Balamani Amma married V M Nair, the managing director and managing editor of the Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi when she was 19 years old. In 1930, her first poem, ‘Kooppukai,’ was published.
Amma’s early poems celebrated motherhood in a new light. While writing the poems, she adopted the ideas and stories of mythological characters and portrayed women as strong figures.
Balamani Amma was dubbed the “poetess of motherhood.” Among her most famous works are ‘Amma’ (1934), ‘Muthassi’ (1962), and ‘Mazhuvinte Katha’ (1966).
It is important to note that Balamani Amma has published more than 20 anthologies of poetry, prose, and translations under her name. Since her poems depicted her love for children and grandchildren, she was known as an amma (mother) and muthassi (grandmother) of Malayalam poetry.
People still remember her works, and she is well-known for her contributions to Malayalam literature as a poet.
