A significant event unfolded at Hotel Vivanta in Begumpet, as India MS Day was observed, drawing attention to the challenges and triumphs faced by individuals grappling with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The occasion saw the launch of the pioneering book, “Unbreakable Spirit— Navigating Life with MS,” authored by the non-MS professional, Ms. Farida Raj, an inspirational figure who has dedicated her life to empowering others.

This groundbreaking book, priced at Rs 249/- and available on Amazon, marks a departure from traditional medical literature, providing an accessible guide for the general public. Launched by esteemed guests including Mr. Durga Prasad, former DGP of CRPF, Raunaq Yar Khan, 9th head of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty of Nizams, Mrs. Meena Gupta, Founder and Chairperson of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India, and Dr. Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist from Apollo Hospitals, the book aims to raise awareness about MS and promote understanding of the lives affected by this condition..

Ms. Farida Raj, an executive committee member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India- Hyderabad chapter (MSSI), shared her unexpected journey into the world of MS and how it fueled her passion to illuminate the lives of those affected. The book, “Unbreakable Spirit,” offers a holistic perspective on MS, delving into its fundamental aspects and profound effects on different life stages and relationships.

Through heartfelt narratives and personal experiences, the book sheds light on the struggles and triumphs faced by those living with MS. The author emphasizes the crucial role of caregivers and offers valuable insights, practical advice, and a sense of community to empower individuals in navigating the challenges posed by MS.

Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a renowned Neurologist, spoke about the uniqueness of the book, noting that it goes beyond medication and covers aspects often overlooked by conventional medical literature. He expressed that it serves as a valuable resource for both patients and medical professionals.

Highlighting the challenges faced by MS patients, Mrs. Meena Gupta focused on the theme #InsureMyMS for this year’s MS Day, seeking support for MS patients to obtain disability certificates from the government without much hassle.

The event also featured a panel discussion moderated by Hari Mohan, a first-class cricketer, and former Ranji Cricket Player. A video film was screened to sensitize the audience about MS, underlining the rising prevalence in India and the need for increased awareness.

Farida Raj, a woman of many facets, has not only championed the cause of MS but has also made significant contributions to areas such as Specific Learning Difficulties (SLDs) and women’s reproductive and mental health.

India, with an estimated disease burden of 2.5 lakh MS cases, faces the challenge of increasing awareness about this autoimmune disease. “Unbreakable Spirit” stands as a beacon of hope, fostering understanding, compassion, and unity in the face of adversity, ultimately illuminating a path towards a richer, more connected life for those affected by MS.
