Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) officially began commercial operations today, marking a major milestone in Mumbai’s aviation and infrastructure growth. The launch expands Mumbai’s air travel capacity and strengthens India’s position as a global aviation hub.

With NMIA now operational, Mumbai joins leading global cities such as London, New York, and Tokyo that operate multiple airports to handle rising passenger demand. As a result, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region enters a new phase with a resilient and future-ready multi-airport system.

Developed and operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited, NMIA is one of India’s largest greenfield airport projects. The airport aims to reduce congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport while supporting long-term traffic growth.

The first commercial flight, IndiGo 6E460 from Bengaluru, landed at 8:00 AM and received a traditional water cannon salute. On its very first day, NMIA handled 48 flights to nine domestic destinations, serving over 4,000 passengers. Peak traffic was recorded early in the morning, highlighting strong demand and smooth operations from day one.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, personally welcomed passengers from the inaugural flight. He also interacted with airport staff, frontline workers, and first-time flyers. Later, he joined airport employees, community members, and Adani Foundation beneficiaries for a ceremonial walk through the terminal.

Calling it a proud moment for Mumbai and India, Adani said the airport reflects what the nation can achieve when ambition meets purpose and execution. He added that NMIA stands as a symbol of confidence, speed, and inclusive growth.

The launch ceremony included a flag-hoisting led by Param Vir Chakra awardees Captain Bana Singh and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, followed by the national anthem. Prominent sportspersons and social influencers also attended the event, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air confirmed the start of scheduled services from Navi Mumbai. Meanwhile, cultural performances featuring Maharashtrian Lezim, Dhol, and Tutari showcased the region’s rich heritage. In a special initiative, farmers, underprivileged families, and persons with disabilities experienced their first-ever flight through a chartered aerial tour of Mumbai.

Jeet Adani, Director of AAHL, said NMIA strengthens Mumbai’s aviation resilience by improving capacity, passenger experience, and long-term readiness.

On the eve of the launch, NMIA hosted a grand drone show with 1,515 synchronised drones, celebrating the “Rise of India” theme and highlighting sustainability and innovation.

With the opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport, a new gateway has emerged—one that sets the stage for Mumbai and India to fly higher into the future.
