Telangana Elevator Association Urges Govt. to Reduce GST on Elevators and Introduce Lift Act

The Telangana Elevator Association (TEA) has emphasized that elevators must be treated as a basic necessity rather than a luxury. As India’s cities continue to grow vertically, lifts play a critical role in providing accessibility, safety, and comfort for people of all age groups. With an ageing population and rapid urban housing expansion, elevators have become central to ensuring inclusive and dignified living in modern communities.

GST on Elevators and Its Impact on Affordable Housing

At present, elevators attract 18% GST, making them costly additions to residential projects. TEA has argued that a lower tax rate would encourage wider adoption, especially in affordable and low-rise housing segments. In Hyderabad alone, nearly 5,000 elevator units are installed every month, with each costing an average of ₹8 lakhs. This translates into a ₹400 crore monthly market, from which the government collects about ₹72 crore in taxes. While this boosts revenue, industry leaders caution that the high GST rate discourages installations in budget projects where lifts are most essential.

The Need for a Lift Act in Telangana

Another pressing concern is the absence of a regulatory framework. Neighboring Andhra Pradesh enacted a Lift Act earlier this year, and stakeholders believe Telangana should follow the same path. According to TEA President Challa Avinash, such legislation would streamline operations, define safety standards, and provide stronger quality assurance for users.

Industry Leaders Call for Reform

Elevators must be recognized as essential infrastructure, much like healthcare facilities,” said BK Goud, General Secretary of the association. He explained that rationalizing GST and introducing a Lift Act would strengthen the industry, support small and medium-sized manufacturers, and ensure affordability for common citizens.

Towards Inclusive Urban Development

The Telangana Elevator Association continues to highlight the urgent need for government intervention in the sector. Policy support in the form of tax relief and a clear regulatory framework would not only boost housing projects but also make cities safer and more inclusive. As urban spaces grow upward, the demand for elevators will only increase — making reforms in this sector both timely and necessary.
