WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump voiced confidence in the ongoing U.S.-India trade negotiations, stating that a trade deal could be finalized soon. Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Tuesday, Trump said the discussions with India are progressing positively.

I think we will have a deal with India,” Trump said, according to CNBC News. “The Prime Minister was here three weeks ago, and they want to make a deal.”

The United States and India have been working to resolve key trade issues, including tariffs and market access. Both countries aim to establish a fair and balanced trade agreement that supports mutual economic growth.

Negotiations are still underway as the two nations seek to strengthen their economic partnership and address longstanding trade barriers.

Progress Praised by U.S. and Indian Officials
Trump’s remarks came a day after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reported “very good progress” on a trade agreement during Vice President JD Vance’s visit to India. Speaking to the media, Bessent shared that Vance and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held productive talks and hinted that official announcements could be made soon.

Earlier on Tuesday, Indian trade officials described the ongoing negotiations as “fruitful.” Representatives from India’s Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office met in Washington, D.C. from April 23 to 25, 2025, to continue discussions. This round of talks followed earlier meetings held in New Delhi in March 2025.

The Indian government reported that both sides had constructive discussions on several important topics, including tariff rates and trade regulations.

Tariffs Remain a Key Issue
It’s important to note that on April 2, 2025, President Trump announced new tariffs on multiple countries, including India and China. He criticized India’s high tariffs on American goods and introduced a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian products to address the trade imbalance.

However, on April 9, 2025, Trump announced a 90-day pause on the new tariffs—extending until July 9—excluding those imposed on China and Hong Kong. Trump explained that the decision to delay was influenced by requests from around 75 countries urging the U.S. to pursue trade agreements instead of immediate tariff implementation.

Future of the U.S.-India Trade Deal
As negotiations continue, both the U.S. and India appear committed to reaching a mutually beneficial trade deal that could enhance bilateral trade relations and boost economic cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.

Stay tuned for further updates as officials work toward a comprehensive U.S.-India trade agreement.
