Jio and Airtel have reduced the prices of their calling and SMS tariff plans. After TRAI’s directive, Jio has cut its prices by up to ₹210, while Airtel has reduced its prices by up to ₹110.

Price Changes After TRAI’s Directive

TRAI had instructed telecom companies to offer separate voice and SMS packs. Initially, the companies simply removed data from their existing plans but did not reduce the prices. After TRAI reviewed these plans, the companies lowered their prices.

TRAI’s Goal: Cheaper Calling and SMS Packs

TRAI wants customers to get cheaper packs for just calling and SMS. Many users only use their phones for calling, but they end up paying for data packs along with their calling recharge, which becomes expensive.

Hence, TRAI directed companies to offer separate calling and SMS plans, which would benefit around 300 million mobile users.

25% Increase in Recharge Prices

In July last year, Jio, Airtel, and VI increased recharge prices by up to 25%. This led to a greater demand for packs without data.

Penalty for Spam Calls

TRAI imposed a fine on Jio, Airtel, VI, and BSNL for failing to curb spam calls and messages. A total fine of ₹12 crore was imposed on these companies, bringing the total penalty to ₹141 crore. However, the companies have not yet paid this fine.
