PV Sindhu wins gold medal:
PV Sindhu, a former world champion, won the women’s singles title at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK, on Monday (8 August).
PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, defeated Canada’s 2014 Commonwealth Games champion Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13 to win her first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in women’s singles.
PV Sindhu finished second to Saina Nehwal in the 2018 Gold Coast final. PV Sindhu won the bronze medal in Glasgow in 2014 after losing to Michelle Li in the semi-finals 22-20, 22-20.
PV Sindhu, ranked seventh in the world, was stiffer in her movements and appeared to play shorter rallies against world No. 13 Michelle Li at the National Exhibition Centre while wearing a strapping on her left ankle.
PV Sindhu led 11-8 at the break thanks to a combination of cross-court drop shots and smashes. The Indian badminton player then built on it after the interval to win the first game.
While PV Sindhu remained focused and made pinpoint returns, the Canadian made numerous unforced errors and was unable to extract longer rallies from PV Sindhu.
However, a 57-stroke rally by Michelle Li when PV Sindhu was leading 13-9 shifted the momentum in the Canadian shuttler’s favour for a brief period.
Nonetheless, PV Sindhu quickly regrouped to reclaim the initiative and complete her set of medals at the Commonwealth Games in 48 minutes. It was also PV Sindhu’s third victory over Michelle Li this year and her ninth overall in the 11th meeting.
PV Sindhu will now prepare for the BWF World Championships 2022, which will be held in Tokyo and begin on August 21.
