Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on December 20, marking a major step in strengthening air connectivity across Northeast India.
The modern terminal was completed in record time. Its design was first unveiled in February at Advantage Assam 2.0. Now, just months later, the facility stands ready for operations, which are expected to begin by the end of February.
A Terminal Rooted in Assam’s Identity
The new terminal is named “The Bamboo Orchids.” It draws inspiration from Assam’s iconic kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and the region’s native bamboo. Around 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo were used in construction. As a result, the terminal blends sustainability with modern airport design.
Moreover, large windows allow natural light inside. This creates a calm and welcoming travel experience for passengers.
Faster, Smarter Passenger Experience
The terminal features DigiYatra-enabled processing and smart check-in systems. Therefore, passengers can expect smoother movement and shorter waiting times. Once fully operational, the terminal will handle up to 13.1 million passengers annually by 2032.
Currently, Guwahati Airport ranks as the 10th busiest airport in India. It also serves as the main aviation hub for all eight Northeastern states.
Built by Adani Airports
Adani Airport Holdings Limited developed and operates the terminal through Guwahati International Airport Limited. The project reflects the group’s focus on speed, quality, and operational readiness.
Speaking at the event, Gautam Adani stated that the terminal will enhance regional growth while providing a world-class travel experience.
Strengthening the Act East Vision
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi said Assam is emerging as India’s eastern gateway. He highlighted that projects like this support the Act East policy and help power India’s long-term economic growth.
In addition, the airport expansion includes plans for cargo and MRO facilities. These developments will create jobs and boost trade across the region.
A New Gateway for Northeast India
In conclusion, the new Guwahati Airport terminal marks a major milestone. It improves connectivity, supports tourism, and strengthens Assam’s role in India’s growth story. With modern infrastructure and strong execution, the terminal sets a new benchmark for airport development in the Northeast.
