National Award Winner Nanjiyamma

Nanjiyamma, a tribal folk singer from Attappadi in Kerala’s Palakkad district, has received a national award for the song she composed and sang for the upcoming KR Sachidanandan film Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020). When the national film awards were announced on 22nd July 2022, the movie won a number of them.

When Nanjiyamma sang the ‘Kalakkatha’ song, she helped her tribal village on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu reclaim its musical identity.

At the age of 15, the singer married off. Her husband, Nanjiyappan, always encouraged her to use her talents.

The animated Nanjiamma, now in her early sixties, enthusiastically pursues her passion for singing folk songs.

She may be popular now, but she still takes her cattle to graze every day and lives an unassuming life.

She sounded upbeat after her victory on 22nd July 2022.

“In our country, let all people achieve success in life,” Nanjiamma was overheard telling her son after learning that Attappadi is now hogging the national spotlight.

Nanjiyamma and another tribal artist, S Pazhaniswami, 42, who also appeared in Ayyappanum Koshiyum, are active participants in folk music programmes held in and around Attappadi village.
