Mahindra Thar EV May Launch on New NFA Modular Platform
Mahindra Thar EV May Launch on New NFA Modular Platform

Mahindra & Mahindra, one of India’s most iconic auto manufacturers, is accelerating its EV ambitions. A key part of this push is the company’s upcoming NFA (New Flexible Architecture) platform—a multi-energy chassis designed to support petrol, diesel, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles. With the Thar EV already teased in 2023 under the codename Thar.e, all eyes are on whether this bold off-roader will adopt the NFA platform at launch.

Here’s what we know so far—and why the NFA might just be Mahindra’s biggest innovation yet.

What Is Mahindra’s NFA Platform?

Unveiled as part of Mahindra’s future product roadmap, the New Flexible Architecture (NFA) is a next-generation vehicle platform built to accommodate multiple drivetrain options. Scheduled to debut on August 15, 2025, the NFA platform will be manufactured at Mahindra’s Chakan plant in Maharashtra.

Key Features:

  • Supports ICE (petrol/diesel) and electric powertrains
  • Modular design: suitable for 2WD and 4WD configurations
  • Focus on scalability, local manufacturing, and global standards

The NFA platform is likely to power several upcoming Mahindra SUVs, and according to reports, it could very well support the much-anticipated Thar EV.

Why Thar EV Could Shift to the NFA Platform

The Thar.e concept was originally unveiled in 2023 on the INGLO platform. However, Mahindra’s strategic shift toward using NFA for multi-energy vehicles suggests a potential switch. The move could make the Thar EV more cost-efficient and production-ready by leveraging shared parts and streamlined manufacturing.

Benefits of the Switch:

  • Improved economies of scale
  • More efficient integration of battery packs & e-drivetrains
  • Enhanced capability for off-road 4WD EV variants
  • Faster homologation and compliance under Indian EV norms
  • Production Timeline and Launch Expectations

Mahindra has officially confirmed that five electric vehicles will launch between 2025 and 2030, alongside seven new internal combustion models.

The NFA platform’s launch on August 15, 2025, could mark a key milestone, especially if Mahindra unveils a prototype or production-ready version of the Thar EV at the event.

The Bigger Picture: India’s EV Revolution

With India aggressively pushing for clean mobility, platforms like NFA represent a crucial pivot for legacy automakers. Mahindra is making a strong bet by developing a homegrown, scalable EV architecture rather than relying solely on imported or joint-venture models.

If successful, the Thar EV on the NFA platform could:

  • Open up a new premium EV off-road segment in India
  • Compete with upcoming EV SUVs from Tata, Hyundai, and MG
  • Drive adoption of EVs in Tier-2 and rural markets where Thar has traditionally thrived

Will NFA Power the Thar EV?

Given the growing demand for electric SUVs in India and abroad, using a shared, modular platform would make strategic and economic sense.

Auto enthusiasts, EV fans, and Mahindra loyalists alike should mark their calendars for August 15, 2025. The future of off-roading might just get electrified.
