India has been re-elected as a member of the United Nations Peacebuilding commission (PBC) for the term 2025-2026. The announcement was made by India’s permanent Mission to the UN on social media. India expressed its commitment to continuing its work with the PBC in promoting global peace and stability. India’s term in the UN peace Mission was set to end on December 31, but re-election allows India to continue its role.
The United Nations peacebuilding Commission was established in December 2005. It is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports peace efforts in countries affected by conflict or war. The Commission helps organize resources, bring together stakeholders, and play a key role in ending conflicts. It also assists in post-conflict reconstruction. India has been a member of the PBC since its formation.
The commission consists of 31 countries, including members from the UN security council, the General Assembly and the Economic and social Council. Currently, around 6,000 Indian soldiers are deployed in various countries as part of the UN peacekeeping mission, including in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, South Sudan, Cyprus, The central African Republic, Western Sahara, the Middle East, and Somalia.
