Urban mobility is undergoing a transformation, with Indian metro rail corporations at the forefront of sustainable transit solutions. Through energy efficiencies, green building practices, and renewable energy integration, these corporations are redefining the urban transport landscape. To further this mission, the Confederation of Indian Industry’s Indian Green Building Council (CII IGBC) hosted the 5th International Conference on Green Metro Systems – The Future of Urban Mobility, in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on 16th February 2024 in New Delhi.
A Platform for Green Innovation
The Green Metro Systems Conference brought together policymakers, industry experts, and sustainability advocates to discuss cutting-edge advancements in metro infrastructure, smart transit solutions, and sustainable mobility. The focus remained on strategies to reduce carbon footprints, ease traffic congestion, and improve urban living standards through innovative metro systems.
The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs & Power; Shri Tokhan Sahu, Minister of State, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, DMRC Ltd & CEO of i-Metro; and Elisabeth Richter, Deputy Head of Economic Cooperation & Development, German Embassy, among others. Their presence emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering green metro systems across India.
Metro Rail’s Role in Sustainability
Metro rail corporations in India have played a crucial role in green urban mobility. Many metro stations across cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Jaipur have received IGBC certification for their commitment to energy-efficient designs, solar power integration, and the use of eco-friendly construction materials. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in particular, has pioneered solar energy usage, setting an example for metro rail systems nationwide.
Speaking at the conference, Shri Manohar Lal emphasized that sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity. He highlighted India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and the critical role that metro rail systems play in reducing vehicular pollution. The use of regenerative braking, rooftop solar panels, and LED energy-efficient lighting were presented as essential steps toward this goal.
Key Announcements and Innovations
One of the major highlights of the conference was the inauguration of India’s first vertical bi-facial solar plant installed on a metro viaduct and a 1MW rooftop solar power plant at Khyber Pass depot. These installations mark a significant milestone in sustainable metro operations by harnessing solar energy without occupying additional land, setting a precedent for future urban infrastructure projects.
Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC Ltd, stated that metro systems must become the backbone of a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient urban future. He reiterated DMRC’s goal to achieve metro networks predominantly powered by renewable energy by 2030, further reinforcing India’s sustainability commitments.
IGBC’s Green MRTS Rating System
The IGBC’s Green Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) Rating System is a comprehensive framework designed to assess the sustainability performance of metro rail networks. It evaluates key areas such as:
- Energy and water management
- Integration of renewable energy sources
- Sustainable construction materials
- Commuter experience and accessibility
- Multi-modal connectivity
The system ensures that metro rail infrastructure is environmentally responsible while improving passenger convenience and urban connectivity.
Industry Leaders Share Perspectives
The conference also featured engaging panel discussions on key themes, including:
- Decarbonization and Green Transit Solutions for Healthy Cities – Experts from UP Metro Rail, Kochi Metro, and Bengaluru Metro discussed strategies to minimize carbon footprints and enhance urban health through sustainable transit solutions.
- Green Transit Solutions: Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Resilience – Focused on renewable energy trends, advanced metro technologies, and best practices for energy conservation.
- Innovative Horizons: Transforming Metro Systems through Technology – Explored cutting-edge advancements in green energy initiatives for metro systems.
- Connecting Continents: Global Trends and Partnerships in Urban Mobility – Highlighted India’s leadership in sustainable transit solutions and international collaborations.
Monetizing Metro Networks Through Transit-Oriented Development
A key takeaway from the conference was the discussion on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) policies, which can significantly boost metro rail networks’ financial sustainability. By leveraging the real estate potential around transit hubs and developing mixed-use urban spaces, metro corporations can create new revenue streams while enhancing urban accessibility.
Conclusion: The Path Forward
CII IGBC’s Green Metro Systems Conference successfully reinforced the significance of sustainability in urban mobility. With increasing metro expansion across India, the integration of green technologies, energy-efficient designs, and innovative transit solutions will pave the way for a cleaner, smarter, and more connected future.
By prioritizing environmental responsibility, collaboration, and continuous innovation, India is setting new benchmarks for sustainable urban transport, ensuring that metro networks are not just transit corridors but integral components of a greener and healthier nation.
