The price of domestic LPG cylinders has increased. The central government has announced a ₹50 hike in the price of LPG cylinders. This update was shared by Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday, April 7. With this hike, the price of a domestic gas cylinder in Delhi will rise from ₹803 to ₹853, effective April 8.

Ujjwala Scheme Beneficiaries Also Affected

Beneficiaries under the Ujjwala Yojana will also feel the impact, as the price of their subsidized cylinders has gone up from ₹500 to ₹550. This will especially affect low-income families who depend on this government subsidy.

When Were the Prices Changed Last?

The last revision happened on March 8, 2024, on the occasion of Women’s Day, when the government reduced LPG prices by ₹100. At that time, the price in Delhi dropped from ₹903 to ₹803.

Why Have Prices Been Increased?

According to the Petroleum Minister, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have suffered losses of around ₹41,000 crore because they were selling LPG below cost. To reduce this financial burden and stabilize the companies’ financials, the government decided to increase the prices.

Commercial Cylinder Prices Reduced

Interestingly, on April 1, 2025, the prices of 19 kg commercial gas cylinders were reduced by ₹44.50:

  • Delhi: ₹1803 → ₹1762
  • Kolkata: ₹1913 → ₹1868.50
  • Mumbai: ₹1755.50 → ₹1713.50
  • Chennai: ₹1921.50 (no change)

How Are LPG Prices Decided?

Oil companies calculate the base price of LPG every month based on factors like:

  • International LPG prices
  • Dollar-to-rupee exchange rate
  • Transportation costs
  • Taxes and dealer margins

After that, GST and other charges are added to arrive at the final retail price.

For subsidized cylinders, the government pays the difference between the base price and retail price. In the case of non-subsidized cylinders, the entire cost is borne by the customer.
