PACE Hospitals successfully performed liver transplantation
PACE Hospital’s team successfully performed a liver transplant in a very frail 8-year-old child with the rare genetic disorder “Alagille Syndrome.”
Alagille Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder seen in less than one in lakh birth in which the bile ducts (canal system) inside the liver do not develop, causing bile to accumulate in the liver and blood. This results in jaundice and severe itching. And, eventually, liver failure. Even if one of the parents has a hidden gene, it is passed on to the children. It is also linked to severe growth retardation.
“At the age of 8, this child weighed only 12 KGS and measured 105 centimeters, even though his actual weight should have been closer to 28 KGS. The child was therefore extremely fragile and at high risk for transplantation, according to chief hepatologist Dr. Govind Verma.

Despite a difficult operation and a frail patient, the child recovered smoothly and was discharged by the third week, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our transplant team, ICU, and nursing team. He is currently six weeks postoperatively and is completely free of itching and jaundice for the first time in his life.
“He has gained 1 kg in the last three weeks, and we expect him to catch up on his weight and height milestones in the coming years,” said Dr. Dhiraj Agarwal, Consultant Hepatologist.

“Our child was severely underweight, which worried us. He is unsure whether he can tolerate such major surgery as a transplant, but thanks to the hard work and dedication of the previous team of doctors and nurses, he has been given a second chance.
