When an 8-year-old boy from Guwahati faced a life-threatening battle with a severe Influenza B infection, his chances of survival seemed bleak. However, a historic cross-country rescue mission by Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Hyderabad, completely changed his outcome. Marking one of India’s longest-duration pediatric ECMO air retrievals, this remarkable story highlights the incredible advancements in modern pediatric critical care.

The Crisis: Severe Influenza B Pneumonia

The young boy was initially admitted to a local hospital in Guwahati with severe pneumonia triggered by an Influenza B infection. His condition rapidly deteriorated. Despite being placed on a ventilator for nearly a week, his oxygen levels remained critically low. With conventional treatment options exhausted and his lungs failing, the medical team knew he needed advanced intervention immediately.

A 3,600km Cross-Country Medical Rescue

Recognizing the severity of the situation, Rainbow Children’s Hospital activated its specialized ECMO Retrieval Team, led by Dr. Kapil B. Sachane, a Pediatric ECMO Specialist.

Here is how the record-breaking rescue unfolded:

  • Bedside Intervention: The medical team flew from Hyderabad to Guwahati, establishing advanced life support directly at the referring hospital’s bedside.
  • Initiating ECMO: They initiated Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV ECMO), a highly advanced therapy that temporarily takes over lung function when the organs can no longer supply adequate oxygen to the body.
  • The Airlift: Once stabilized on ECMO, the boy was airlifted nearly 1,800 kilometers to Hyderabad for dedicated intensive care.

The entire retrieval operation covered over 3,600 kilometers round-trip and took approximately 24 hours from the initiation of ECMO to the successful handover in Hyderabad. This mission officially marks the first reported pediatric ECMO retrieval from North East India.

The 36-Day Battle on Life Support

The successful transport was only the beginning of an incredibly challenging battle. The young patient spent over five weeks on ECMO support. His recovery required 24/7 care from a multidisciplinary team, including:

  • Pediatric intensivists and ECMO specialists
  • Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons
  • Perfusionists and nurses
  • Respiratory and rehabilitation therapists

During his hospital stay, the boy developed a difficult-to-treat infection, further complicating his recovery. Despite these steep odds, his resilience—combined with expert medical care—prevailed. After 36 days on ECMO, he was successfully weaned off the life-support system. Today, he is clinically stable and ready to return home to his family.

“Watching him walk out of the hospital and prepare to return home is the greatest reward for our entire team,” noted Dr. Sachane, emphasizing that establishing ECMO before transport was the critical factor in saving the child’s life.

Bridging the Gap in Pediatric Critical Care

Rainbow Children’s Hospital has established India’s only dedicated Pediatric ECMO Retrieval Programme. This initiative is designed to ensure that geography does not dictate a child’s chance of survival during a medical emergency.

  • World-Class Outcomes: “We have done 42 Paediatric & Newborn ECMO in our centre and our outcomes are comparable to best centres in world,” stated Dr. Farhan AR Shaikh, HOD-Paediatric Intensive Care.
  • Exceptional Teamwork: Dr. Dinesh Kumar Chirla, Director of Intensive Care Services, credited the outstanding collaboration between the PICU staff, nursing team, and pediatric subspecialists for their high survival rates in complex critical care cases.

For families facing life-threatening medical emergencies, distance is no longer an insurmountable barrier. This historic rescue underscores how advanced pediatric retrieval services are actively transforming healthcare access across India, bringing hope to children no matter where they live.
