French Delegation visited the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Attapur, Hyderabad, to gain insights into India’s water purification and urban wastewater management techniques. The visit was part of an international knowledge exchange facilitated by Les Ateliers de Cergy, a French urban planning association, under their initiative “Water and Metropolization—A Climate-Responsive Urban Vision for Lakes.”
This exchange focuses on urban water management strategies and the role of STPs in addressing metropolitan water challenges.
Spotlight on Hyderabad’s STPs
The French team, accompanied by local officials, inspected two operational STPs in Attapur:
- 51 MLD STP
- 23 MLD STP
These plants utilize the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology, a state-of-the-art system designed for efficient wastewater treatment and purification. This method ensures higher performance and sustainability in managing urban sewage.
Additionally, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is constructing two more STPs in Attapur with a capacity of:
- 64 MLD
- 40 MLD
Vasa Satyanarayana, General Manager of Jalamandali, briefed the delegation about the technical advancements and operational methodologies adopted at these facilities. He highlighted how these plants contribute to environmental sustainability and urban water resource management.
Les Ateliers de Cergy Initiative
The visit aligns with the broader goals of Les Ateliers de Cergy, which is conducting an international workshop on urban water management and climate adaptation. Titled “Water and Metropolization—A Climate-Responsive Urban Vision for Lakes,” the program emphasizes:
- Sustainable urban water strategies.
- Innovations in metropolitan wastewater management.
- Climate adaptation practices for urban lakes.
This workshop, scheduled to begin on December 6th, aims to foster collaboration between international experts and local authorities to tackle pressing water-related challenges in urban environments.
Key Officials and Participation
The French delegation was warmly received by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), with nodal officers appointed to guide their visit. On November 28th, the delegation is set to tour additional facilities and engage in further discussions with local authorities and experts.
Notable participants during the visit included:
- The Ranga Reddy District Collector.
- GHMC Commissioner.
- Senior Engineers from the Musi River Development Corporation.
- Officials from the Irrigation Department.
- Staff and officers from HMWSSB and NIUM.
Hyderabad’s Vision for Water Management
This visit underscores Hyderabad’s commitment to developing sustainable water management systems. The city has made significant strides in expanding its STP network to meet the growing demands of its urban population.
The integration of cutting-edge technologies like SBR not only improves water purification efficiency but also aligns with global efforts to combat water scarcity and ensure clean water availability for all.
A Path Towards Collaboration
The French delegation’s visit paves the way for enhanced international cooperation in water resource management. By sharing expertise and exploring innovative solutions, cities like Hyderabad and Paris can jointly address challenges posed by urbanization and climate change.
HMWSSB’s collaboration with global organizations reflects its proactive approach to sustainable development and reinforces Hyderabad’s position as a leader in urban water management practices.
