KIMS–Sunshine Hospital, Begumpet, has saved the life of a 58-year-old man through a ground-breaking 12-hour hybrid aortic surgery. The patient suffered from a rare Type B aortic dissection with life-threatening complications.
He had hypertension and diabetes and was admitted in a critical condition. Tests revealed a partially blocked aorta, multiple aneurysms, and complete blockage of a major intestinal artery. Another hospital had earlier declined surgery due to the complexity of his case.
A Life-Saving Hybrid Approach
A team led by Dr. Sridhar Kasturi, Senior Interventional Cardiologist & HOD – Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery, designed a unique two-stage hybrid treatment.
First, doctors used a 32×164 mm Relay Pro endovascular stent graft (Terumo–Japan) to stabilize the descending aorta. Then, they performed an intricate Elephant Trunk Surgery, replacing the ascending aorta and three major arch arteries while maintaining continuous blood flow to the brain.
The marathon procedure lasted 12 hours and ended without complications.
“This case proves how hybrid cardiac surgery can combine precision and endurance to save lives in extreme emergencies,” said Dr. Sridhar Kasturi.
The surgery brought together a multidisciplinary team of experts — interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and anaesthetists. Their coordination and advanced planning made the surgery a success.
